FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where does Headlands work?

We work across Northern California, frequently in the San Francisco bay area and wine country counties. Do you have a project some where else? Don’t hesitate to reach out as we do work elsewhere, including out of state.

What is Warm Modern California Architecture?

We began to define our design aesthetic as “warm modernism” after recognizing that the minimalism, clean lines, and simplicity of modernism are sometimes perceived as cold or uninviting. We believe light, warmth and comfort are all part of a well-designed home. We use natural materials, textiles and light to warm up modernism. California’s history of mid-century modern design, along with the state’s typically mild weather that enables strong indoor/outdoor connections, also informs Headlands’ design point-of-view.

Do you take on projects with other aesthetics?

The short answer is yes! We believe that an architect-client relationship flourishes when there is a mutual interest in a design point-of-view, but we’re happy to lean into other aesthetics (e.g. see our art deco infused San Francisco kitchen project). Let’s talk to see if we’re a good fit to bring your project to life.

Do you take on smaller renovation projects or only major remodels?

Yes! Our projects vary in scope from bathroom remodels and interior design to full renovation and new builds. Any time your project is big enough to need plans and permits (e.g. moving the location of plumbing fixtures, relocating walls, adding windows) it's good to have an architect on board.

The homepage mentions “consulting services.” What does that mean?

We offer support for discrete services including assessing renovation opportunities for potential home buyers while they are looking at new homes or drawing proposed plans for sellers of undeveloped lots. Have an idea for how we might help? Please send us an email.

How can I follow along with Headlands’ work?

Thanks for asking! If you are considering working with Headlands, please reach out for a full portfolio and project CV. If you’re just interested in what we’re up to, we would love to see you over on our Instagram or here on our blog.
